Hanoi Rocks!

We loved Hanoi! A really cool (if still slightly high octane) city. Has a somewhat older, lived-in feel than Ho Chi Minh City. We felt quite tired from the travels, so actually had two room service meals, with cheesy Western movies.

HOWEVER, we still did the following;

- went for early morning run around the Hanoi lake
- tried Harry Potter-inspired ‘potions’/ drinks at a themed cafe - the butter beer was particularly well-realised!
- has genuinely one of of the best burgers, at a place called ‘Chops’.
- saw Vietnamese water puppet show - absolutely amazing music and cool visuals (in that order, for me)
- tried to continue our tradition of seeing the sunset from a rooftop bar - but comically managed to end up at the wrong rooftop bar (just 1 building across from our intended choice)
- survived mad traffic (it was explained to us that other drivers can get angry if you do not go through a red light)
-tried durian, the world’s smelliest fruit- we can attest to that....
- saw Vietnam/Japan flower show
- went to a snake restaurant. Tried a cobra made into 11 different dishes! And tried more tasty local food.

So, ok, we still managed to do quite a lot!

Now writing this from the airport. Vietnam has been amazing, probably one of the most naturally beautiful countries we have seen. Sad to be leaving, but more adventures await us in Japan!

Kobe and Koyasan

After travelling via the super-fast Shinkansen train, we arrived at Shin-Kobe station (‘Shin’ prefix meaning something like ‘new’) and enjoyed spending two days here. Felt good to use the same hotel as a base for consecutive days! We had a nice time exploring the city, which also had a Chinatown district! It had felt perhaps more business-like than Fukuoka, and obviously we were keen to try the famous Kobe beef. A tip we had read that we would be happy to pass on - many restaurants (at least those offering the specialty Wagyu beef in Kobe) offer the same menu at lunch, but at half-price. Accordingly, we tempered our carnivorous desires until lunch the following day, when we had an amazing meal, and at a very reasonable price! Our lunch was at a small (6 people capacity!) Teppanyaki style restaurant. The was really friendly, and kept making jokes throughout. And it was seriously the best beef we have ever had! After the amazing lunch, we went to explore the unusual Carpentry Tools M...
