To round off our time in Tokyo, we had spent two days exploring various districts. We also ate a lot.
Thursday evening featured the Ninja-themed restaurant. It was really fun, combination of great costumes, performances from the waiters and also table magic. Plus a french-style 10 course sampling menu. Not really easy to capture the experience but here’s a photo of the desert course frog / cheesecake - with actual grated Parmesan. Roman added the bemused facial expression...
On Friday, we went to the famous Tsukiji fish market. Actual fish market had been moved to a new location (and we weren’t going to go to the 4am tuna auction anyway!!), but much of the old outer market had remained. We had probably the best sushi and sashimi ever. And it was fun to explore.
We also watched the original 1954 Godzilla film in the evening. Really amazing film actually, pretty relentless and deep. Special FX aside, also far superior to any remake since. Recommended - with a side of warning about its fairly bleak nature.
On our last (half)day in Tokyo, we checked out the hip Harajuku district. Lots of cool shops, and excellent soba noodles. Roman fulfilled his desire to find a beret.
We were sad to leave Tokyo (and had a bit of stress trying to get our Japan Rail passes, but we did manage to get our train to Matsumoto. Can’t wait to see more of Japan!
